Nice roadside restaurants

Sep 20, 2018
Mode of Transport: Car

From Bengaluru, up to Krishnagiri, many tolls need to be paid. At Krishnagiri, you have to take a left to go to Chennai. If you miss it, the road will take you to Salem. Before Krishnagiri itself on the left you get Krishna, cafe coffee day, mcdonalds etc in one complex. Both oldies had idli vada at Krishna, the youngsters had mcdonalds carry bag and coffee . One can see temple at Hosur, Krishnagiri fort, Yelagiri hills near Vaniyambadi, dry Palar river and many medical and engineering colleges on the way . . Though the highway was 6 lanes, there were few villages and pedestrian crossing that slowed down the speed. Once you enter the city, the traffic was heavy and the roads were not all that good . There were Murugan idli and Kumbakonam degree coffee chain on the way. Sais and Sharavana Bhavans were also there. No need to carry any food or snack. All varieties are available. Clean toilets are also were available. Petrol stations had all sorts of facilities. Nice road to take road trip.

Good drive

Drive was excellent, the road is not that good from Kanchipuram to SriPerumbudur. Obviously you have to pay tolls at many places and I felt it was very high at some places as the road was not good according to what you pay. On the way you can visit Kanchipuram, Vellore if time permits. Both the places are significant for temples.

Road is super smooth

The road from Bangalore to Chennai is super smooth. You can't resist to drive in 100-120 speed. It is totally toll road, we have to pay little bit but very much comfortable. Approximate cost for toll will be - 35+75+75+50+50. As this is toll road, you may not get road side food always. Lots of petrol pump is there in this journey. But I feel to make full tank before journey. Approximately it will take 6 hrs to complete the journey. In certain stretch before entering Vellore, you will find railway route at your side. The direction of the road is well-marked, so no need to have constant look into the gprs in your mobile.

Happy and safe journey.

Chennai express trip by road

Mar 28, 2016
Mode of Transport: Car

On an impulse we decided to drive from Bangalore to Chennai.

There are two options : one via Hoskote and Kolar, and the other via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Ambur and Vellore, and both these routes merge at Ranipet, after which you cross Kanchipuram and Sriperumbudur before reaching Chennai. After asking many travellers, we chose Hosur, and man, are we are grateful to those who suggested this. The highway is awesome, at least upto Ranipet, and even my tired, old WagonR was clocking 130+ speeds without a murmur. We took around 7 hours to reach Chennai.

One more tip, please leave as early as possible to beat both the rush of cars / trucks / buses, and also to minimize the travel time in hot conditions. We left Bangalore at 4.30 AM, and reached our hotel at Chennai by 11.30 AM. Breakfast suggestions : Any of A2B, Krishna Sagar, Dhaba Express, or even McDonald's near Krishnagiri. If you leave early enough, then you can have lunch at Chennai, but if you are not an early riser, then lunch options are Star Briyani at Ambur, and Saravana Bhavan (veg) or The Vellore Kitchen at Vellore.

One word of caution for the Hosur route : there are as many as 7 toll booths in this 350 odd km stretch, and the total amount (one way) comes to around Rs. 400, but when you drive on the road, you will feel that every rupee you have paid is worth it.

You will encounter heavy density of traffic

Jan 12, 2016
Mode of Transport: Car

Except for drive through Bangalore to the highway and the entry to Chennai, the drive was pleasant. Both Bangalore and Chennai are cosmopolitan cities you will encounter heavy density of traffic and it will take some time to reach your destination. As a frequent traveler to Chennai, I have tried both the routes, via Chittoor and via Krishnagiri, and I found there is no difference. At least, via Chittoor, the lorry traffic is considerably less.
