Train Ticket Cancellation & Refund Guide
Cancellation fines vary by the quota you have booked your ticket against, time before train's departure, class of travel, distance for which reservation is done and the PNR status.
Cancelling 24 hours in advance
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than a day, i.e. 24 days, before the scheduled departure time of the train, a cancellation charge will be deducted as per the below list
INR 240 for AC First Class or Executive Class Ticket Cancellation
INR 200 for AC 2 Tier /First Class
INR 180 for AC Chair car/ AC 3 Economy/ AC 3 Tier
INR 120 for Sleeper Class Ticket Cancellation
INR 60 for Second Class Ticket Cancellation
Train ticket cancelling less than 24 hours
If a train ticket is cancelled within 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure time of the train, cancellation charges will be 25% of the ticket fare subject to the minimum flat rate mentioned above.
Cancelling less than 12 hours in advance
In the case of cancelling less than 12 hours and up to 4 hours before scheduled train departure time up to chart preparation of train, cancellation charge will be 50% of the ticket fare subject to the minimum flat rate already mentioned.
Additionally, with the cancellation charge, the service tax amount is also charged as service charge is non-refundable.
Refund for failed transaction
The complete fare and service charge is refunded to the customer in case of a transaction failure at the time of booking. The refunds are directly processed to the customer's bank account.
Cancellation of waitlisted or RAC tickets
The tickets booked online can be cancelled by visiting the IRCTC website. In case, the cancellation is being done after the chart preparation, TDR needs to be filed for a refund by following its rules.
Refund for cancelled trains
The refunds are processed in full amount in case of train cancellations. The full refund is processed for RAC and confirmed tickets. TDR can also be filed for cancelled trains to get the refund.
Tatkal ticket refund
The refund for cancelled Tatkal ticket is not admissible.

Checking the refund status
To check refund status online or if you wish to know how to check refund status of cancelled ticket, you can follow the below-mentioned steps -
- Visit the IRCTC website
- Click on the tab "My transactions"
- Click on the tab "Refund status of cancelled tickets"
- The cancelled refund page displays the details of your cancelled tickets with the "transaction ID"
- Click on the "transaction ID" to get the details of your refund
Cancellations can be done for Sampark Kranti express trains, Garib rath trains and sleeper, seater and passenger trains.
