IRCTC Eastern Railway Zone

Headquartered in Kolkata and covering a route of 2382.38 km, the Eastern Zone of the Indian Railways is subdivided into the Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol and Malda zones for better regulation. The Eastern railways ply through regions very rich in agriculture, minerals and trade. Jamalpur, Kanchrapara and Jamalpur are the three most important workshop centres of the East Zone. 

Eastern Railways also accommodates many long-distance travelling trains and major goods trains carrying coal, which comprises of around 86% of the entire traffic. Another interesting fact is that this zone now runs most of its rural rail routes on electricity, which previously used to run on diesel.

Check train schedules 

Any sudden changes like the delay on arrival or change of date is recorded and notified. Go to indianrail.gov.in/train_Schedule.html, enter your railway number or name and click on the tab saying 'Get Schedule'. Route Number, arrival time, departure time, halt time, distance (in km) and number of days will be detailed in the table. 

The Eastern Railway Zone is one of the busiest in the country owing to the number of trains that operate to and from the area. Kolkata, being one of the major stations in the country is like the gateway to the rest of the states in North East India. This notwithstanding the other states that are also present in the Eastern Zones.  

Knowing your zone: 

It is important for one to know the zone that they wish to book their tickets in. The Eastern railway map provides one with all the information regarding the areas as well as the stations that are present in the East zone. By knowing the right station for one to get off and on at, one will be able to plan their trips out much better in advance. 

Check seat availability 

Go to indianrail.gov.in/seat_Avail.html, enter either train number, journey date, source station code, destination station code, class of seating or quota type in the corresponding boxes and click on the tab 'Get Availability' to check if a seat of choice is available.

Getting seats booked and confirmed beforehand is mandatory for one to travel on the railways. Failure to produce ticket at any time of checking will be viewed as a punishable offence. So make sure that you have a ticket to display from the time of boarding the train to disembarking.
