One of the famous place people visit, as it's near Lonavala and one of the most simplest tracks. Specially for those who are not used to trekking it's a good place to start. For Location of this place pls google it out. You will get the proper location on the Map. Search for "Lohagad Fort, Maharashtra".
We in a group of 35 people visited this place in a month of Dec, 2015 on a Monday. Yes its an odd day to visit as we all had a special holiday on that day in our course which we all were doing together. It wasn't a bank holiday. So the benefit of it was we were alone on the fort that day. Actually, that was fun!!
We had booked a private 40 seater bus. Roads are good but still you need an experienced bus driver to drive the bus to the base point of the fort. We started our journey around 7.30 am from Mumbai keeping our meeting point Bandra (E) station and further taking the Sion-Panvel highway via BKC road and managed to reach to Lohagad base point around 10.30 am with an halt at food court. As it was a Monday so we didn't encountered much traffic on our way. Google maps have a proper and accurate path.
At the base point we didn't manage to find any public washrooms. For guys we managed in nature but for girls we had to request and pay some amount to the local villagers for using their private washrooms.
There weren't much restaurants or dhabas at the base but we didn't much inquired about it as had our own food packed with us. I feel it's preferred to carry your own food from your place or on the way from Lonavala.
A quick brief about the trek:
The trek starts from climbing the stairs of fort, it's a bit tiring but we still enjoyed by taking many photograph breaks in between. You will encounter few gates which has historical importance and further you start climbing higher you will surely enjoy the scenic beauty of villages, farms, greenery, the Pawna Lake, mountain ranges, etc.
The movement the stairs is over you will feel that's the end of your track. But that's not all you still have to walk till the tail of the fort which will take you around 45 min to 1 hour 15 min roughly depending upon your speed. On your way till the tail of the fort you will come across a rock which you have to climb down, which feels like an impossible task!! But don't worry there is another longer route which can take you the tail of the fort.
As we were in a bigger group we wasted a lot of time in between and reached the tail of the fort in nearly 3 hours. But I feel you can manage the way in 2 hours.
We sat there for 1 hour enjoying the cool breeze and the scenic beauty around us and taking many pictures. And then we started returning.
So I feel it's a good one day outing. It's preferred to go in groups so that you can enjoy. As the place does not have much of adventure of its own. If you are looking forward for adventurous tracks then I feel there are many other places to visit near Mumbai.
But still we enjoyed a lot!!
Best time to visit: Its monsoon (when it's actually raining) and Dec & Jan. So checkout the weather forecast before you visit.
Beware of monkeys taking away your food!!
If you come down early and you have your own vehicle then you can visit either Pawna Lake or Tiger Hill on the same day.
