Ma Tara Temple is the main attraction of the temple town of Tarapith, which is located towards the town centre. Ma Tara Temple, in 1225, is a prominent tantric temple related to Shaktism sect of Hinduism.  

Ma Tara Temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara, a form of Goddess Maha Kali. The main idol of Ma Tara in the sanctum sanctorum is adorned with silk sari, flower garlands and jewellery. A stone image of Ma Tara can also be seen in the sanctum sanctorum, in which the Goddess is in the form of a loving mother suckling baby Shiva.

Ma Tara Temple is visited by married women who seek blessings for a long married life. Her footprints found in the adjacent cremation ground, at the spot where Ma Tara appeared before saint Bamakhepa, is also visited by the followers of Tantric faith.

Ma Tara Temple is considered among the Mahapeeths of the country and is a holy spot for the Hindus.
