Heritage Destinations in India

Cave paintings are found in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Over the coming millennia, there was significant development in the tools and techniques of these humans which led to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indus Valley Civilization is one of the three most ancient and historically significant civilisations in the world and was located along the banks of the river Indus. It eventually disintegrated due to water shortage and the inhabitants moved towards modern day India. 

The Spice and Silk Route in India 

Centuries later, India was a booming hub of academics, agriculture and modernisation. There were several dynasties such as the Magadh, Mauyran and Cholas. India became famous around the world particularly for quality silk and spices. It saw a rapid rise in international trade which led to the interest of western kingdoms. Soon, the subcontinent fell prey to the conquerors such as Alexander, the Arabs and Turkish Empire. The most significant was that of the Mughal Empire. Eventually the country was taken over by the British East India Company and was colonised for over 200 years until the Independence in 1947.

Historical and Heritage Site Tourism in India

With such a long history, historical tourism in India is an interesting yet humbling experience. There are countless sites to visit to experience India’s ancient culture. The historical and heritage site tourism is booming with visitors from all over the globe. The following is a list of interesting India destinations to visit for a taste of the ancient history of the country:

  • Bhimbetka Rock Shelters in Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh – The cave paintings at Bhimbetka Rock Shelters was said to have been done by pre-historic man over 30,000 years ago.
  • Lothal in Ahmadabad, Gujarat – Dating back to 3500 BCE, Lothal was a prominent city in the Indus Valley Civilisation.
  • Edakkal Caves in Wayanad, Kerala – The carvings at the Edakkal Caves are said to be from the Stone Age. 
  • Kumhrar in Patna, Bihar – Here are the ruins of the ancient city of Pataliputra under the rule of Ashoka. These ancient relics date back to 600 BCE.
  • Sanchi Stupa in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh – Considered to be India’s oldest stone structure, the stupa was built be Ashoka in 3rd Century BCE.

Famous Tourist Places in India

A major chunk of the famous monuments are from the medieval India. These structures were masterfully built and have withstood the test of time for centuries. This list incorporates the top 5 major spots for heritage tourism in India:

  • Agra, Uttar Pradesh – The Taj Mahal in Agra is India’s most iconic monuments and most visited as well. The white marble structure was built as a tomb for Mumtaz Mahal, who was the favourite wife of the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. Other places to visit here are the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri which are both architectural masterpieces from the Mughal Rule.
  • Jaipur and Jaisalmer, Rajasthan – Rajasthan consists of monuments as regal as its own name. The capital city of Jaipur has many places of interest, with the most famous being the Hawa Mahal. The Amer fort was the stronghold of the Rajputana Empire for a long time and is a marvellous structure. Jaisalmer is one other tourist place in Rajasthan with an ancient fort built over 900 years ago. There is the Raj Palace inside the fort which is also a tourist attraction.
  • Old Delhi, Delhi – The city of Delhi is perhaps India’s most popular destination for food, politics and a taste of history. Being the capital city of the Mughal Empire, the city has many historical sites to see. The most famous monument here is the Qutub Minar and the surrounding remains. The Humayun’s is an architectural wonder and is home to the remains of the great emperor. 
  • Hampi, KarnatakaPerhaps one of the most underrated sites in India, Hampi contains the stone remains of the great Vijayanagara Empire. The most famous structure here is the stone chariot at the Vittala temple and the musical pillars. The Virupaksha Temple is, to this day, an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. The Lotus Mahal and Elephant stables are other famous structures of the town.
  • Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu – The temples at Mahabalipuram are some of the oldest stone structures in India. Each monument was hand carved by master artisans in the architecture unique to this area. The Seven Pagodas of Mahabalipuram are perhaps the most famous closely followed by the Shore Temple and stone carved elephants.
