India became famous around the world particularly for quality silk and spices. It saw a rapid rise in international trade which led to the interest of western kingdoms. Soon, the subcontinent fell prey to the conquerors such as Alexander, the Arabs and Turkish Empire. The most significant was that of the Mughal Empire. Eventually the country was taken over by the British East India Company and was colonised for over 200 years until the Independence in 1947.
