Cool journey with small roads in Alibaug

Mar 17, 2016
Mode of Transport: Car

This is our regular route to go to Murud. You can go via SION panvel road till panvel. then Via Mumbai-Goa road till pen. Then Via Alibag go to Murud. Road from PEN to Wadkhal is very polluted due to heavy traffic. But road from Alibaug to Murud is very scenic. Number of beaches are on the way such as nagaon. Road is small but it goes through nature.

Cab from Alibaug to Murud

Jun 2, 2014
Mode of Transport: Taxi

You have to take a ferry from Gateway of India to Alibaug. That ferry drops you at Alibaug. From there, you can either take a cab or auto or a simple bus. I found cab as the most comfortable option since buses were run by private folks and were in real bad shape, while auto would charge you exorbitantly despite being uncomfortable.

The route has lots of signages giving directions, but many only in Marathi

Mode of Transport: Car

We went from Mumbai to Nandgaon, just a few km short of Murud and stayed at Mahua Bagh farmhouse-hotel.

We started at about 7.15 am from Mumbai, and took Palm Beach Road upto the Navi Mumbai Municipal corporation signal, from where we turned right and continued onto the NH17 (Mumbai-Goa highway) upto Wadkhal Naka. At Wadkhal, We left NH17 continued straight on the road towards Alibaug, from where we followed the road signs to Murud. Mahua Baug is situated around 15 km after Kashid, and the last one kilometre is an unpaved, rocky stretch of dirt road which turns off the highway and leads you to the farmhouse.

Since most of this stretch is a single-lane highway, going is a bit slow due to traffic, bad roads and the famous Indian undisciplined driving. Even so, if you leave sufficiently early in the morning, you should be in Murud in around 4.5 hours, taking into consideration a short 30 minutes stop for refreshments en route.

The view is nothing to write home about till you cross the Kundalika river and take the right turn onto the Revdanda-Murud road. A few kilometres down this road, it becomes quite pleasant, with shaded, tree-lined roads passing through small hamlets with cute, colourful houses.

There is also a Konkan Bazaar on the way, and a women's cooperative which runs a store at Chaul, where you can pick up Maharashtrian masalas and snacks, as well as other home essentials. There are a lot of road signages giving directions, but many only in Marathi, which might pose a problem if you don't read the Devnagari script.

Short cut from Panvel expressway

Nov 15, 2013
Mode of Transport: Car

This road takes a turn towards Palm Beach road in Navi Mumbai instead of going toward Pune expressway. This road is not used by many motorists who prefers to take main road and thus you would find this road not very busy and thus convenient for us. Please let me admit that I was not aware of this short cut and we simply followed Google maps to reach Murud however this road has breath taking scenery where move on mountains to reach Panvel expressway after which the same road takes you to Murud. There is a diversion from Pen but anyway we preferred to go through Alibaug as there are lots of Konkan shops selling various products comes along villages. Overall a good experience and it is around 150 km journey. There are lots of places to eat comes on way so no issues if travelling with family.
