We took Mumbai-Pune Express-Wai-Panchgani route. We started at 6am and reach at 12.30Pm which include 45 minutes halt for breakfast. The road was excellent though we had to pay toll of around Rs 500/-. While coming back, we took Panchgani-NH4-Panvel-Mumbai route, where we paid toll of only Rs.200/- The road was also very good. I think one should take the second route while going to Panchgani/Mahabaleshwar. I also strongly advise not to take Mumbai-Mahad route which is very narrow and risky. The food in Mahabaleshwar is average and very costly. For 3 person, the average food cost is Rs.1500-2000 per day. For local seller in Mahabaleshwar, tourist are "bakra" for them. I think during peak season, Singapore will be cheaper then Mahabaleshwar. Govt should take initiative to rationalise f ...Read More

      "Mumbai-Pune Expressway drive is enjoyable"

We started a bit late from Goregaon Mumbai since we had a small puja at our home. We should have avoided taking the Western Express highway towards Bandra and instead should have driven to Borivili-Thane through Godbandhar Road. Since there were some road work in Santacruz we were delayed due to the resulting traffic jam. The roads in Navi Mumbai was also pathetic. It was only after reaching Mumbai-Pune Expressway was when we really enjoyed the drive. Hope by next year these roads in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai is completed and ready. As we were driving towards Mahabaleshwar the weather turned misty and the visibility was very low. This further slowed us and we reached Mahableshwar late in the evening. We would advice others to start early from Mumbai in order to avoid traffic jams and reach ...Read More

The road was smooth as butter, particularly Mumbai-Pune expressway stretch. But once you cross Pune and enter AH-47/NH4, driving on the highway demands a bit more skill and concentration because of all of the villages that come on the way. Villagers tend to cross the road without looking out for oncoming cars. Trucks and buses will mow you down (not literally though!! They will only tail you very closely and blow their horns like crazy), if you are driving slower than they are not allowing them to pass. But apart from these, the drive is a real nice one. You can enjoy it with your friends and family, along with some loud music and food. Note: Avoid drink and drive situations. Cheers and happy driving!!!

We travelled by our own car to avoid any timetable bound trip as all of us wanted to relax and stop over wherever we wanted. It was fun to explore places on the way and enjoyed roadside food. At Mahabaleshwor, we hired a guide who could also drive. He took us to all important places and also explained the details of the sites. This was fun as we didn't had the tension of parking and tourist tickets as the guide managed everything. We could spend good long hours at the place and we enjoyed more without any restrictions of public transport. I highly recommend to hire a guide, its worth it.

We started off early in the morning when the traffic is less, which enables you to save a lot of time and we able to hit the e-way very quickly. The roads are very good and once you are on the Pune expressway you can drive at speed over 100 km per hour. The travellers must carry some snacks and water which would help you avoid unnecessary stoppages and save time. The roads from Pune are a bit congested and hence one needs to be well stocked with food and water. The drive to Mahabaleshwar is very scenic and comfortable.
