I have traveled to Shillong after a gap of 6 years and I was really surprised to see the well developed 4 lane road to Shillong from Khanapara. The road is mostly open on 2 sides, except for few locations where it was blocked due to landslide. I had lunch on the way & coming back at Nongpoh - the Woodland dhaba. This dhaba has many items in its menu and prices are reasonable. Traffic was less and disciplined. The barapani lake provides a mesmerising view on the way to Shillong. We hired a Tavera Taxi for 3 days for Guwahati-Shilong-Cherapunji-Guwahati because our flight was on 26 jan from Guwahati. Shilong is just 100 km from Guwahati but a difficult hilly road and having expanding to 4 lane it takes about 3-4 hours to reach Shilong. However our driver of Tai was nice one. He show us additional places out of our knowledge on the way. However 26 Jan was called " BANDH" So we returned on 2nd day and previous day of flight.e. 25.1 at Guwahati.

Oh !!! the drive to Shillong is always a pleasure and I never miss this opportunity and make the driver sit at the back, while the take the steering and enjoy every bit of the drive uphill and downhill. The hills with the pines when you reach Shillong is a welcome and one must roll down the windows... so as to feel and smell the fresh pine air... an excellent feeling in itself. \r\n\r\nThe road has been much widened and straightened now, but you do miss those small and much curving roads in the ...Read More

Though some parts of the route was under construction but the overall experience of the journey was fantastic. I started my journey hiring an SUV from a local agency. On the way I stopped at Nongpoh for refreshment. Had a good food at Woodland Restaurant there. Passed through greenery all throughout the journey. Beautiful hills, fantastic lake at Barapani and Pine trees on the hills were enjoyed just like anything.
