On the whole, our train travel experience in India was excellent, unlike much of the rest of our journey. Trains ran pretty much on time, we were always booked into our berth without any issues, and it was reasonably comfortable.
In fact, our travelling by train between our destinations was our little sanctuary away from the madness that is India. Some of that madness is great, but a lot of it is not nice at all, & in some cases it's downright criminal.
Lansdowne is a great weekend drive from Delhi NCR. The roads good and travel time is not much. You can really enjoy the mystique hilly drive after Kotdwar. Drive slow and enjoy the natural beauty. On the route near SBmount resort after crossing Kotdwar you can take you car down to the river stream and can have a great fun there. While going from Delhi just before Bijnor there is long bridge & dam over holy Ganges. One can take a holy ganga bath there but dont expect the crowd to be good.
Lansdowne is a weekend getaway from Delhi/NCR which can be planned if you have 3 days in hand. It is a cantonment town in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Not crowded much. Army cant area. Off-road adventures. Hotels in between the jungles. Bird watching is also great. Scenic and peaceful.
We started in the morning at around 6:45 from Mahipalpur (nearby Delhi Airport). Crossed Delhi without much of a hassle. The road after Meerut was brilliant. You can easily drive at about 100 - 120 kms. Took us around 9 hours to reach lansdowne with lots of stops. If you prefer to take 1 or 2 stops, you might be there in 7 hours or so. The road after Kotdwar gets beautiful and especially for the last 45 minutes. It is brilliant. Brilliant road condition, thanks to Garhwal regiment. You need to pay about 50 Rs. Every time you enter the town.
